LOST IN ST. PETERSBURG - PHOTO STORYBy Vita Kacha | 27.10.2016

Those who are a bit familiar with the central european weather circumstances during summer would know that August is usually the warmest month of a year. Keeping this in mind we were all excited to go on another LOST IN adventure which this time took a place in the Russian second biggest city St.Petersburg. Most of us haven`t ever been to Russia before therefore we couldn`t wait what`s it gonna be like. St.Petersburg is supposed to be the most beautiful city and a symbol of Russian pride but did we share the same opinion after our one week stay?

First shock comes right on the way from the airport as we are entering downtown which is absolutely stacked with cars. Traffic on every single street is just so huge you can do nothing but wait.  We also noticed that most cars are smashed, scratched or beaten in all ways which was no surprise. Within couple of minutes in this madness we saw several car accidents happened just a rock throw far. The highlight was when somebody stopped their car infront of our minivan right in the middle of the street so we weren`t able to pass through. This led to our driver getting out of the car using force to sort it out. Well, that`s how it goes in Russia.

Another great news followed when our guide and Russian Monster Energy rider Pavel Anufriev pointed out that it is raining basically all the time in St.Petersburg. According to the research we did later the least raining month is february however mainly because of the fact that it`s usually snowing. For rest of the year it`s raining every other day only. We should have better gone to Moscow they said. Well, we were already in Pete and ready to fight against these predicaments. After all we got used to it pretty well and even had a couple of full non raining days.

Next thing you will have to get used to in Petersburg is overcoming long distances. There are more than 5 mil inhabitants living at 1500 square kilometers area. Although these are just a numbers and doesn`t reveal the truth that the spots are usually faraway from each other and it takes some effort to find one. However don`t let this statement fool you because once you get to the place you won`t regret it for a second! Petersburg doesn`t have spots at every corner but most of the ones we found were really cool and fun as hell.

Talking about places to ride in St.Pete I have to mention some highlights such as this huge plaza with the Stalin statue at Moskovskiy prospekt street. This marble kingdom is situated pretty far from downtown but believe me, it is worth of pedaling as there are all kinds of spots including banks,  straight ledges, down ledges, big set of stairs and a load of other interesting stuff to ride on. Even couple of days wouldn’t be enough to fully use the potential this place has.

Petersburg is also very popular tourist destination particularly because of the feeling you get when you`re in downtown looking at all those orthodox church`s little towers, astonishing. Due to the fact Petersburg is located at confluence of the river Něva with the Finish bay it is often called Russian Venezia. The Něva river separates the whole city into two halves connected with tens of lifting bridges which are opening up every night to let the cargo ships pass through. Such a spectacular show to observe however be careful on what side of the river you are because once the bridges are up it`s pretty tough to get on the other side.

Despite all the bad rap we`ve got at the beginning It has been one hell of a ride week which I believe everyone going to remember for good. St.Petersburg is definitely an interesting place full of friendly people and even though most of them are not the best english speakers, after couple of glasses at one of the local bars you will easily end up talking till early morning hours. If you are considering trip to the not so traditional location, Petersburg might be the place. Also, there is a strong BMX community that won`t let you down so make sure you`ll hit someone up to show you around before coming over.
